A long long time ago, there were the monophonic ringtones who ruled the market under their big leader the nokia tune. Later on the polyphonic ringtones came and beat them. But now the time has come for the realtones...
First let me explain what realtones exactly are. Technically they're mp3 songs or songs in another format. The difference between realtones and polyphonic ringtones is the fact that polyphonic ringtones are .midi files and realtones are .mp3 or another music format. Midi files are only capable of creating beeps like the polyphonic and monophonic ringtones do. Mp3 files are compressed songs. So you actually hear the real song of the radio but only a shorter version.
There are different sorts of realtones available. The first realtones were actually called truetones, those truetones are realtones with a weird sound. There are truetones of a fart or farm sounds. But you also have truetones of celebrities having a talk with you. Something like: hey you pick up the phone.
Also you have nametones. Those nametones are songs that have a name in it. There are a lot of nametones available and a nametone with your name in it would probably exist. It sounds weird, a realtone with your name in it. But someone is actually singing with your name, something like: Peter, you're telephone rings pick it up before it's too late.
But the biggest hit will probably be the real realtones. The realtones with your favorite song. But it might take a while before it hits big because a lot of people haven't bought a phone that supports realtones yet. But a lot of mobile phones that are for sale now do support realtones and are not that expensive anymore.
Realtones are quite expensive in comparison with polyphonic ringtones. But people are willing to pay for it. The reason why they're that expensive is because of the record companies. They charge about $1,50 dollars per sold realtone. And then the selling company has only the rights to sell them, the realtone isn't even created yet.
In spite of the costs and the fact that not all the phones support them, the realtones are already very popular. And will probably become the leading product for the mobile phone soon.
